This Royalty Check Look Familiar?

by John Oszajca on June 4, 2014

This was just too priceless not to share…

It’s a residual check from Warner Brothers that my good friend (and fellow musician) Ovis shared with me. I think we’ve all been here before…

“Oh Warner Brothers, you crack me up ….”

If you’re seeing royalty checks like this then perhaps Music Marketing Manifesto 3.0 can help. 😉

On October 3, thirty high scoohl students from Mount Si’s Key Club visited the homes of two elderly folks in North Bend. Armed with gloves, garden tools, and determination ..they set out to offer assistance to these homeowners where the labor had simply become too big an obstacle. The students split and stacked firewood, trimmed overgrown bushes and hedges, brought garden beds back to objects of beauty, raked leaves, and filled an enormous trailer with discarded and rotting lumber that was taken to the dump. The best part of this endeavor was the smiles and hugs given by the homeowners to these high scoohl Key Clubbers. That so many showed up at their homes to Pay it Forward was overwhelming and one of the most heart-warming experiences I have seen. Way to go Mount Si Key Club!

Oops! Forgot the decimal point! That’s $.10 – $.30, sorry!

John Oszajca June 8, 2014 at 3:19 pm

Hey, that’s a heck of a lot better than one cent. 🙂

Darrell Looney June 6, 2014 at 3:35 am

Wow! Too bad we live in an age of inflation! Compared to that paltry sum, I’m doing great just on Spotify alone. I get between $1 to $3 a month with just the old mp3.com tactic of asking people to add me to their playlists!

This is the very reason im here at MMM. I’m going to take this with me every time I meet people to show them why I do what I do… thx so much for enlightening us. I needed a wake up call. Just love it.

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for your feedback and for the vote of confidence. I really do believe that artists can have far more influence over their results when that can control the marketing. Let me know if I can ever help with anything.

Makes me feel pretty good about the $1.80 I made last month on Tunecore 🙂

John Oszajca June 8, 2014 at 3:20 pm

Hi James,

Yeah, that’s far better without a doubt 🙂

ted June 5, 2014 at 8:48 pm

He either had 5,000 streams on Spotify….or sold 7,000 CDs on my former label. 🙁

John Oszajca June 8, 2014 at 3:39 pm

Hi Ted,

Ouch, so this residual check does look familiar then. Thanks for sharing.

Let me know if I can ever help with anything.

That’s big money…. mine are more like, 0.0000001

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 7:13 pm

Hi Paul,

That’s the spirit! A little hard work and one day we can all aspire to earn a penny 🙂

pedestrianmonkey June 5, 2014 at 6:52 pm

I hope you told him to not spend it all in one place lol.

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 6:56 pm

Right? I’m almost wondering how much it costs the bank to pay the teller to cash this thing. If you ad up everything from paper, to postage, to the banks time, this check cost everyone involved a small fortune 🙂

hayate June 5, 2014 at 5:30 pm

I am unable to answer this..but thanks for the info John 🙂

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 7:06 pm

Hi Hayate,

Thanks for stopping by the site.

That is hilarious! Thanks for sharing John and I hope Warner bros will cough up a little more for this artist over time! 🙂

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 5:27 pm

My pleasure Trey. And let’s hope 🙂

At least it is credit I manage a singer friend of mine and the last one we got was a few hundred in debit So much for “advances” Anyway I would cash yours quickly as record companies are a thing of the past!

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 5:28 pm

Ouch. That’s no fun at all. Thanks for stopping by Andrew!

Sam Burton June 5, 2014 at 5:48 am

And I thought my royalty checks were bad. Literally not even worth the paper it was printed on. Thanks for the share John. Gave me a smile 🙂

John Oszajca June 5, 2014 at 5:28 pm
